In conjunction with the Abruzzo regional council, the Concours Mondial is organising a unique event focusing on award-winning rosés from Rosé Selection by CMB and Abruzzo culinary excellence on 4-6 June 2021 in L’Aquila.

On 4-6 June 2021

L’Aquila is preparing to welcome personalities from the world of rosé wine and culinary excellence. On 4-5-6 June 2021, 40 international experts will meet in L’Aquila to pair grand gold and gold medal-winning wines from Rosé Selection by CMB with dishes prepared by Abruzzo’s Michelin-starred chefs. Their mission will be to define the perfect match and award Rosé & Food Experience Trophies.

The three days will feature not only tastings but also conferences/seminars on the extensive theme of ‘Rosés’. Several topics will be addressed by international experts, including the impact of global warming on rosé wine production, marketing rosé wines and changing consumer tastes across the globe.

Rosé wines awarded at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles will be judged with a new objective, and that is to define the most suitable gourmet food pairing for each award-winning wine. After a blind tasting, judges will be tasked with categorising entries based on their typicity and their suitability for specific product categories or gourmet food concepts.

The Abruzzo region provides an outstanding backdrop for the event – in addition to its world-famous Cerasuolo wines, it is also home to a plethora of PGI-labelled products such as Navelli saffron, Campotosto mortadella, Ventricina di Guilmi salami, Castel del Monte pecorino, Agnone Caciocavallo and Scarmoza cheese and torrone.

There is no denying that rosé works well with all types of dishes and cuisines!

Abruzzo – between land and sea

Abruzzo’s myriad defining features, from its unspoilt countryside to its protected areas, villages steeped in history, archaeological sites and excellent food and wine venues, are what make it so unique.

A journey to Abruzzo begins with its coastline where the beaches range from fully equipped to totally secluded. Hidden between the golden sand and unspoilt pebble-lined creeks are ancient pine forests and breath-taking scenery. The coast is also home to distinctive overwater cottages, that used to house fishermen and have almost all been converted into restaurants where you can savour traditional local seafood dishes.

Looking inland, Abruzzo unfurls landscapes of gentle rolling hills. There are also some of Italy’s most authentic sites here – churches and mediaeval abbeys, isolated hermitages ensconced between the rocks amidst the lofty peaks of the Apennines, picture-postcard castles, historic buildings and beautiful lunar-like karstic vistas.

The region has a distinctive natural ecosystem and biodiversity, protected by three national parks, a regional park and over thirty nature reserves and natural oases. This extraordinarily well-preserved environment has earned Abruzzo the title of ‘green heart of Europe’. Approximately one third of its land area is demarcated and protected and can be gradually discovered along one of its thousand trails or through the windows of an historic train which cuts unobtrusively through the countryside.

The region also offers some genuine culinary discoveries. Its excellent food can be found in its four provinces and includes seafood specialities and farm produce stemming from its ancient tradition of transhumance, which in 2019 was recognised by Unesco as intangible cultural heritage.

Lose yourself in the endless expanses of olive trees and vineyards producing the finest oils and wines, or amidst the colourful fields of flowers yielding the priceless Aquila saffron, the aptly-named ‘red gold’ of Abruzzo. The extensive choice of local cheeses and unique charcuterie, from Pecorino di Farindola to Ventricina del Vastese, also deserves a mention, as do confectionary specialities such as Sulmona sugared almonds. This variety of aromas and flavours captures the infinite nuances of a region with which it is easy to fall in love and where nature sends you on an emotional rollercoaster.
