Champagne Reigns Supreme at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Sparkling Wines Session

For the first time in its history, the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles held a competition in Moldova, with Chisinau hosting the prestigious Sparkling Wines Session in early September. Nearly 1,100 sparkling wines from 29 countries were blind-tasted by over 50 international judges.

Champagne secured its place at the top of the podium, with 11 cuvées earning the coveted Grand Gold Medal- the competition’s highest distinction. The standout of the competition was Maison Tribaut-Schloesser’s “Authentique 2012” which also took home the International Sparkling Wine Revelation trophy. Bordeaux distinguished itself with the International Sparkling Rosé Wine Revelation, awarded to Malesan Rosé Brut Terra Vitis by Castel Frères. French crémants and regional sparkling wines from Alsace, Burgundy, and Limoux further showcased the country’s expertise and diversity.

Germany once again delivered an outstanding performance, following up on last year’s excellent results. This year, 14 medals, including 1 Grand Gold Medal (for the Fluxus 2017 from Weingut Bergdolt Klostergut St.Lamprecht) and 11 Gold Medals. With a remarkable 70% medal rate, Germany definitely stands out among the top performers of the competition.

Italy reaffirmed its leading role in the world of bubbles, with nearly a third of Italian entries winning medals, a 10% increase over last year. Lombardy’s Franciacorta shone especially brightly, as the Centinari estate captured Italian Revelation distinction (and 3 other medals), alongside notable recognition for Prosecco DOC from Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Spain’s Cavas also captured the spotlight, securing 52 medals in total. The Spanish Revelation went to the 2015 Vinyes de Can Sala from Ferrer Wines in Catalonia, with further Grand Gold Medals awarded to producers from Extremadura, Catalonia, and Valencia.

Moldova, hosting the competition for the very first time, demonstrated the rapid progress of its sparkling wine sector by claiming a total of 21 Medals (5 Gold Medals and 16 Silver Medals) a testament to its rising quality and growing international reputation.

The 2025 Sparkling Wine Session results underscore the exceptional quality and diversity found among sparkling wines worldwide, with producers from both traditional and emerging regions earning well-deserved recognition.
