The prestigious kitchen of the Magione Papale restaurant in L’Aquila was the focal point of the competition. It served typical Abruzzo ‘surf and turf’ cuisine, prepared with the students of the ‘Leonardo da Vinci L’Aquila’ hospitality institute. It offered a complete panorama of Abruzzo culinary excellence, served blind with wines in the competition finals. The gourmet recipes ranged from Paccheri with sweet Ventricina del Vastese and mozzarella cheese with PDO L’Aquila Saffron to cold lentil soup with Santo Stefano di Sessanio lentils, PGI Fucino ‘Agata’ potato and spicy L’Aquila liver sausage. They also included Abruzzo-style fish soup, Pescocostanzo Caciocavallo cheese on Solina bread with Abruzzo wildflower honey, Arrosticini abruzzesi and thinly sliced swordfish with real Atessa dried figs on fried flatbreads, along with sweet recipes made from Amaretti morbidi and mostaccioli, along with suggestions for the aperitif, such as sirloin steak Strascicata.
Over the three-day event, there was also the opportunity to review the ‘drink pink’ phenomenon through debates curated by the Consortium for the Protection of Abruzzo Wines; Gilles Masson and Nathalie Poulzagues, respectively director and project manager at the Research and Experimentation Centre on Rosé Wine in Provence; Pierpaolo Penco, wine and food marketing consultant at Affinamenti and Country Manager Italy for Wine Intelligence; Kateřina Slezáková and Gaia Gottardo, respectively marketing manager of Vinolok and Vinolok distributor at Amorim Cork Italia S.p.A.
The first Food & Rosé Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (concoursmondial.com/en/food-rose-selection-2/) fully complied with social distancing rules and anti-Covid safety measures, partly thanks to equipment from the Abruzzo-based event sponsor Safegatepro (www.safegatepro.it) and Dante Labs of L’Aquila, which provided the mobile laboratory for Covid testing.
The Rosé Selection of Concours Mondial de Bruxelles will be back with a second edition in March 2022, but this time in Spain.
