CMB Sweet and Fortified Wines Session: France and Portugal in the Spotlight

The results of the fourth and final CMB session of the year, Sweet and Fortified Wines, have just been revealed. This year, over 300 wines from 23 countries competed. In addition to the major producing countries of this category – Portugal, France, Italy, and China, which dominate the competition – several surprises came from other nations. France and Portugal each win a Revelation of the competition.

In early October, 27 international tasters representing 9 nationalities gathered to participate in a blind tasting of the samples entered in the Sweet and Fortified Wines Session of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.

Positive results for France
One of the two competition Revelations comes from the Loire Valley. Domaine le Mont Cuvée Privilège 2021 by Claude and Louis Robin won the Sweet Wines Revelation. In total, France and its remarkable sweet and fortified wines took home 21 medals, with an excellent 40% of participants receiving awards.

Portugal leads in medals
The other Revelation of the competition goes to the white Porto wine Dr White Port 50 Years Old from Agri-Roncão, which won the Revelation for Fortified Wines. In total, Portugal and its sweet and fortified wines took home no fewer than 30 medals, with a strong 44% of participants being awarded: the Grand Gold Medal mentioned earlier, 17 Gold Medals, and 12 Silver Medals.

Slight progress for Italy
Italy won a total of 20 medals, including 2 Grand Gold Medals, which is 6 more than in the previous edition.

China also performed well, with more than 50% of its wines receiving medals, including a Grand Gold Medal. Hungary earned its first Grand Gold Medal with Tokay TR Szamorodni 2019 from TR Wines Tokaj.

Slovakia didn’t leave empty-handed thanks to a Tokay wine, Tokajský Výber 6-putnový 2019 from Chateau Grand Bari, which won a Gold Medal.

Despite the challenging geopolitical context in Ukraine in recent years, Shabo Winery managed to stand out with 3 wines receiving medals (1 Gold and 2 Silver Medals).
