Having the city of San Miguel de Allende as one of the most visited in Mexico, it’s normal that wine tourism plays a really important role in Guanajuato economy. Both national and international visitors delight in the gastronomy and the bright sun, and now more, with an important offer of local drinks that enrich any food… From wine and of course mezcal, to eggnog and the regional drinks that we can find in different parts of the State.

Wine tourism is then, a clear player on the board of tourism in Guanajuato, and also now, one of the most famous thanks to the enthusiasm and good work of the wineries. Visitors from different parts of the world are increasingly falling in love with wines who come to try in its various wineries, restaurants, tasting rooms and complete experiences that are offered around. Nowadays, the increase in the number of visitors has motivated a significant investment in increasingly refined gastronomic offer, without forgetting the powerful and tasty central roots of traditional Guanajuato cuisine.

The hotels and the nightlife in Guanajuato already today attract a flow of around 80,000 visitors a year and their consequent economic impact. New hotels and restaurants open every day, cuisine evolves, diversifies and demands more agricultural products. With the inauguration of each new winery, wine tourism is encouraged and opens its enormous range of possibilities towards the future, details Gerschman, Rodolfo (2022), Vineyards and Wineries of Guanajuato, Tierra de Vinos, México, Ministry of Tourism of Guanajuato.

The Wine Museum, the wine route and the roads of Guanajuato…
In 2016, the Wine Museum was inaugurated in Dolores Hidalgo, whose main objective is to accommodate all the events that have marked the historical path of the wine culture of Guanajuato, Bajío and Mexico. The Wine Museum has 4 rooms: the first shows the history of wine chronologically and gives a historical overview of the Miguel Hidalgo Vineyards. In the second room it presents the vineyard and the vine, the main strains, diseases, pruning, tools and the harvest. In the third room the winery, the manufacture and uses of the wooden barrel, the cork and the types of bottles and glasses are exhibited. The sensory space takes place in the fourth room, where there is an interactive table so that visitors can experience each of the tasting steps. Likewise, this room exhibits the Vineyards in Guanajuato and a map of Wine-growing Mexico.

In 2019, the Wine Route was inaugurated, which today promotes activities that complement the hedonistic tourism that runs through it, from purchasing leather products, ceramic and leather crafts, to lavender extracts, chilcuague, typical sweets and honey. Every year the harvest season is officially launched, which puts producers in agreement so that at least one weekend, each winery has the opportunity to receive visitors and offer them a multitude of experiences, which speaks highly of the organization among its members.
